History of Mia Ching Cattery

by Pamela Easley - 2002

Mia Ching was established by my mom Frances Byford in 1967. Her first cat was a Seal Point Siamese named Ching. She was also active in getting the Lynx Point Siamese/Color Point in CFA being accepted. She saw her first Balinese in Florida and got her in 1974. Her name was Blue Eidolon. Mom bred her to her Siamese. Some of those kittens as adults were bred to other Balinese. The Balinese she used came from Chimney Sweep, Do-Re-Me, Cannings, Shah's Temple, and Angeland Catteries.

My husband Darrell and I got our first Balinese in 1985. Mom had stopped breeding for several years, but she was able to find us a Balinese that went back to her lines. His name was Kootara's Chopsticks of Mia Ching. Choppy was not the quality of my mom's cats, as the lady we got him from was just breeding pets to supplement her income. But we were lucky to have the line. We just had more work to do! We got a Blue Point Balinese (Javanese in CFA) in late 1986. Her name was Anjeau's Princess Serra of Mia Ching. Serra was a very nice cat. Choppy and Serra had their first litter March 12th 1987.

All though I had shown in ACFA, TICA, and CFA some with my mom when I was younger. I was most interested in establishing myself and Mia Ching in CFA. This meant I was breeding solid point Javanese by CFA standards. I was intrigued by the Lynx Points and wanted to better our cat's type to the point that they would be competitive in CFA. We got a nice boy from Anne Ulbright, CH Anjeau's Wang Cha of Mia Ching (Prince to us). Prince is behind all of our Javanese since then. To me Balanese and Javanese are sister breeds, the only difference is color point. The parent breed to the Balanese, Javanese, Color Points, and the Oriental shorthairs and longhairs is the Siamese.

The people that have helped me the most are Ann Sandner (Tassam Cattery-Bay Area CA) Ann Ulbright (Annjeau Cattery-Seattle Area, WA) Joan Ardrey (ArdreyManor Cattery-Seattle Area WA) Kris Willison (KLM Cattery-Houston, TX) Leslie Brinson (Loblolly Cattery-Durham NC), Pat Decano (Casadecano Cattery-Seattle Area, WA), and last, but not least, Terrie Smith (Purrmatrix Cattery-Long Island, NY).
