What is a Variant?

Balinese, Javanese, Oriental Longhair

Throughout the history of our breeds, serious breeders have continued to 'cross back' to our shorthaired parent breeds in an ongoing effort to improve type, prevent inbreeding and promote stamina. The resulting kittens look very much like their shorthair parent, but will carry the longhair gene and are registered as Balinese, Javanese or Oriental Longhair. Breeders often refer to these shorthairs as variants. Variants cannot be shown*, but are valuable for future breeding as they will produce longhaired kittens when bred to another longhair carrier.
Variants make excellent pets for someone who prefers the shorthair look... Because they are not 'true' shorthairs, the coat texture is often plush like velvet.

* Certain colors of Oriental Longhair variants can be shown as Oriental Shorthairs.
